2018 HOME AND GARDEN SHOW

March 1 – 4 @ The DeVos Place

This year the theme for the West Michigan Home & Garden Show from Showspan was “Great Stories”. Brian Koetje of Koetje Landscaping LLC was this year’s Grand Garden Designer. Brian chose the story of Moses and the Promised Land from the Bible. There were six highlights based on this story represented throughout the display. There were burning bushes to represent when God spoke to Moses through a burning bush to get him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Brian had Murals painted on each side of the walkway to represent the sea being held back on both sides for the Israelites to walk through on dry ground, there was also a bubbling rock to represent when Moses struck the rock in the desert and God made water flow out of it for the Israelites to have water to drink, there were 10 commandments engraved in some pavers and at the end of the display representation of the Greatest Story of all, with an empty tomb and a sign that read He Is Risen, to represent the resurrection of Jesus, displayed in a Hawthorn tree, which represented the crown of thorns that He wore on the cross.

The Grand Garden theme this year was “A Celebration of Michigan”. The Grand Garden reflected on the history, natural beauty, and on the fastest growing industries in our wonderful state. The garden represented the native natural woodlands, the power and majesty of the Tahquamenon Falls; the invention of the automobile, the rapid growth of the craft brewery industry, especially in “Beer City”, USA (Grand Rapids!) The Grand Garden celebrated Michigan by focusing on native plants and their varieties and cultivars, using stone harvested from the soils of Michigan, and pavers and wall blocks manufactured in Michigan. Special features in the garden were, a classic Ford Model T, (representing auto industry) native woodland field, a Tahquamenon water feature, hops, beer tap water feature, bar space, an outdoor kitchen, and also taxidermy animals (squirrels, skunk, badger, rabbit and ducks) .

The Garden was visited by several people throughout the four days of the show. The kids loved the play area, which included a slide, tunnel and small pond with boats along with a play structure. The walk way through the garden created a very nice spring stroll after a very long winter in West Michigan. Guest enjoyed the sitting area which included an outdoor fireplace. A huge THANK YOU to Chris and Jami and all of our talented and generous AGRLP members who helped create the 2014 Grand Garden.
